Medical, Health, and Safety

How can parents contact a participant in an emergency?

We will publish a phone list of adult leaders to call in case of an emergency two weeks before Trek. We will have good radio communication along the Trek route.

What medical staff will be on Trek?

We will have a team of medical personnel on staff, including physicians and other health personnel trained in emergency response.

What about pre-existing medical conditions?

Medical conditions that could impact a person’s ability to participate in the Trek experience (or which require medication during Trek) need to be disclosed on the Medical Release Form. The medical team will screen the registration forms to ensure that each participant can safely participate. Every reasonable accommodation will be made to allow a youth to participate in Trek. Please contact Dr. Hubbard (509-389-3372) with any specific questions or concerns.

What about blisters?

In past Treks, blisters have presented the most common ailment on the trail. We strongly encourage all participants to have hiking boots that provide support, keep out the dirt and sand, and fit comfortably with two pairs of socks. Hiking shoes or boots need to be broken in prior to Trek. Participants should work up to a 5-10 mile hike in any new boots or shoes, at least two weeks prior to Trek.

Participants are strongly encouraged to wear two pair of socks at a time. The inner sock should be thin and wick moisture (ie: synthetic or silk). The outer sock should have good padding and also wick moisture. Wool or wool/synthetic blends are good. Cotton socks should be avoided!

Participants should include moleskin and/or blister bandages in their first aid kits. This will allow for faster self-help and minimize the demand on the medical team.

What about sun burn or heat injuries?

Participants need to be prepared to hike on hot and sunny days as well as cold and rainy days. The Trek clothing will cover most of the body. Sun bonnets and wide brimmed hats will help shade the head and face. Participants should bring and use sunscreen.

Participants will be reminded to hydrate properly, and water will be available along the trail and in camp.

What about sanitation and hygiene?

Campsites will have port-a-potties and hand wash stations. Trek participants should also bring soap or hand sanitizer.

Food Safety

Food will be stored at base camp, where it can be maintained at proper temperatures. Food will be supplied to the Trek camps daily. If you have other food concerns, please reach out to Robb Grangroth (rgrangroth@hotmail.com).
